Bars and babies, they just don't mix. But just because we have kids doesn't mean we can't enjoy a Happy Hour every now and then (in fact, I'll argue we parents need them more). So you can imagine my excitement when I discovered Family Happy Hour at UH Manoa.
This brilliant event includes a free concert just for kids, while parents kick back for pau hana. It’s sponsored by Student Parents at Manoa and is open to all families in the UH community and the general public. And although it’s held at Manoa Garden, the on-campus watering hole, it’s totally kid-friendly—you’ll see more sippy cups than shot glasses.
The big draw for the kiddos is Uncle Wayne and the Howling Dog Band. This beloved group plays children's songs like “Aloha I Ke Kai (Love the Ocean),” “Pec Slap Boogie,” and “Fishy Fish.” The mostly toddler and preschool crowd dances the evening away in front of the stage, while parents chill at the tables with dinner and drinks.
You can bring your own picnic, or grab food from Ba-Le right inside. We got pupus and beers for us, and chicken strips and apple juice for the kiddos, although they were having so much fun running around with the other kids they weren't too interested in eating.
Get there early to snag a table; it fills up pretty fast. But no wonder; this Happy Hour truly is a stroke of genius. Food, drinks, free entertainment, happy kids, happy parents, no babysitter necessary. Cheers!
