DiscoverArt is a monthly, family-friendly initiative organized by Creative Arts Experience and Honolulu Culture and Arts District Association, in partnership with ARTS at Marks Garage. The action takes place in and around ARTS at Marks Garage, at The Hawaii State Art Museum and in other shops and galleries in the Downtown-Chinatown. DiscoverArt is held every Second Saturday. Unless otherwise specified, activities run between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The July 9 lineup includes:
Hawaii Theatre. The Miyazaki Ghibli Film Festival, showcasing the work of internationally acclaimed animator Hayao Miyazaki. This family-friendly event will include local vendors, art and crafts, workshops, costume contest and popular food vendors. Make-and-Take Project by Creative Art Experience. This month’s activity ties in with Hawaii Theatre’s Miyazaki Film Festival. Stop by the make-and-take table on Bethel Street and make your own Miyazaki-inspired sleep mask. You can also make your very own Cork Critter using recycled wine corks and colorful telephone wire.
HiSAM. Free hands-on art activity is “Shape it Up!”, building with shapes and making your own unique abstract sculpture. All ages welcome, all materials provided. Activity runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hawaii State Art Museum, 250 South Hotel Street.
ARTS at Marks Garage. Molokai Nui A Hina – opening reception and exhibit. Stories of Molokai by Solomon Enos, Kahi Ching, Meleanna Meyer, Harinane Orme and Al Lagunero with artists, students and kupuna of Molokai visually depicting an endangered oral tradition on eight banners. Molokai youth will be on hand to tell the stories from the murals about giants, ghosts, poison wood, caterpillar men and more, preserving anecdotes and lessons learned from their kupuna relevant and applicable to our lives today.
Bethel Street Art Parklets. Look for silk screening, sculpture by Peter Murray and ceramics by Jackie Lau, Ken Kang and Philip Markwart. Booths run along Bethel Street, Ewa side of the street between Pauahi Street and Chaplain Lane.
Louis Pohl Gallery. Exhibits Imai Kalahele’s work in a show titled, “Stirring up the Waters”. Hawaii-based Hanafuda master, Helen Nakano will be on hand to teach the game and show her newly-minted Hawaiian designs, featuring native flora, legend and fauna. 1142 Bethel Street.
Nuuanu Avenue Arts Parklets. Features Hawaii art and artists. Takes place on the Diamond Head sidewalk of Nuuanu Avenue, between Pauahi Street and Chaplain Lane.
Improv Theatre. Throughout the day, On The Spot Improv will offer short pieces (drama and comedy) made up at the moment with audience participation. Improv skits takes place in front of ARTS at Marks Garage, 1159 Nuuanu Avenue.
Live Music. A number of talented musicians will perform live in front of ARTs at Marks Garage, including guitarist Terry Oyama and Nightbloom. ARTS at Marks, 1159 Nuuanu Avenue. Music ends at 2 p.m.
New Life Courtyard. Arts, crafts and jewelry will be showcased as part of New Life Family Center. The open-air courtyard, outside the post office and Mei Sum at 1170 Nuuanu, across from Barrio Vintage.
