New Vietnamese Cinema 2015: Jackpot (Trúng Số)

The National Cinema Department has begun a tour of the U.S. that starts in Honolulu and brings filmmakers, actors, critics and scholars to Hawai‘i to present six critically acclaimed, new films. Inspired by a true story, Jackpot (Trúng Số) is a heartfelt comedy directed by Vietnamese-American multi-hyphenate Dustin Nguyễn. Tu Phi (Tai Chi), fresh out of a 15-year prison sentence, meets Thom (Ninh Dương Lan Ngọc) a young lottery-ticket seller from his home village. From here they form a unique friendship, but when Tu Phi wins the big jackpot, his good fortune sets off a chain of events through their small peaceful village. Special guests: Director/actor Dustin Nguyễn and producer Bebe Pham will be in attendance on July 5 at 7:30pm. Vilsoni Hereniko, filmmaker and professor, University of Hawai‘i–Mānoa, Academy of Creative Media, will moderate a Q+A following the screening. Sunday, July 5, 7:30 p.m.; Tuesday July 7, 1 p.m.
