Prince Kuhio Parade
Bring your family to watch the Prince Kūhiō Parade March 28. This is one of the largest and longest-running parades in the state of Hawai‘i.
The parade starts at Kapolei Parkway and ends at Ka Makana Aliʻi, where a large Hoʻolauleʻa is planned. Approximately 15,000 spectators are expected to line Kapolei Parkway to welcome the 150-unit parade containing floats, Hawaiian paʻū riders, trolleys, decorated vehicles and marching bands from across Oʻahu.
In addition, festivities across the state will take place throughout the month of March to honor the Prince. A full listing of activities and applications to participate can be found at hawaiiancouncil.org/kuhio.
Every year since the 1970’s parades and Hoʻolauleʻa have occurred to honor Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole – the “Citizen Prince”– for his contributions to Hawaiʻi and the Hawaiian community.
Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole was a prince of the reigning House of Kalākaua when the government was overthrown in 1893. He went on to become a politician in the Territory of Hawaiʻi as delegate to the United States Congress. Prince Kūhiō founded the first Hawaiian Civic Club on Dec 7, 1918 and led the passage of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1921. Many in our community are standing on the foundation that he laid those many years ago.
