The Maryknoll sisters founded Maryknoll School in 1927 with a mission not only to offer quality education, but also to teach important life values such as generosity, compassion and kindness. The school’s motto, Noblesse Oblige, means “To whom much is given, much is expected,” a legacy that continues in the many ways Maryknoll incorporates community service into its curriculum. Students across grades participate in a wide range of experiences that benefit the community, including:
Senior Capstone Project
In addition to a 100-hour community service requirement for high schoolers before graduation, Maryknoll seniors do a capstone project on a topic that has some kind of community impact.
Grade School Day of Service
To commemorate Maryknoll’s 90th anniversary, in May 2018 grades K through 8 participated in a Grade School Day of Service, titled “Noblesse Oblige: Continuing the Legacy.” This service learning project was so successful in engaging the students and making a positive impact in the community that the Day of Service has become an annual tradition.
Day of Recollection
This school year, grades 9 through 12 have started doing quarterly service learning projects. Every quarter, one of the high school grades does a Day of Recollection, while the remaining three grades go out into the community to do service.
Thanksgiving
Each year, Maryknoll partners with Catholic Charities Hawai‘i and The Salvation Army Hawai‘i for Thanksgiving. This year, students created nearly 900 placemats for The Salvation Army Hawai‘i’s Thanksgiving Dinner at the Blaisdell Center and donated supplies for 75 families through Catholic Charities Hawai‘i.
